How hard are RPDs to build? I know they can be bought complete but they sure cost a pretty penny. I have the AK bug after building my yugo underfolder and finishing up some 74s. Are there any sites that offer instructions on the builds? Anyone know where to get a reciever for them?

Thanks

Pat

That could be a fun project.  For now I'm sticking with AKs due to the low cost...  But perhaps someday this year or so...

I know of no one offering either complete receivers or 80% receivers. If there was anything around in either of these options I would build one if the cost could be kept under 1,000. For now, the Vector RPD is the only game in town; much like the Vltor PKM... An RPD sure would be great to add to the collection but there is little or no build info for them, very few if any compliance parts, and no one in the build community with alot of experience putting them together from kits. -At least this is what I have been able to gather in the recent past. If there is any new info on RPD builds; please fill me in! I would love to know. For now, my only option for getting one that I would be willing to accept is if I find a used Vector for less than 1,500.

yea, thats what ive found in my search. . . not a thing lol.

maybe ill just buy a kit and see what happens, seems to come with the recievers cut up so i guess an idea of size and dimensions can be made.

Vector sells receivers.  It's not on their website, you have to call them.

There is no way you could build on for under a grand.  Give that up.

Furthermore, building an RPD is not like building an AR (strap on parts) or building an AK (rivet on parts).  It's a milled receiver and there's a lot of 'wierdness'.  It's not an AK at all, even though it may look like one and shoot the same ammo.  Also, it's an open bolt gun so you will have to convert to closed bolt not to mention non-existent 922 parts.

If you were to get the receiver from Vector, a kit from CFS and build it yourself, you would be within $200-$300 of what a semi kit would be complete from Vector.  So you're better off going with a full built gun from Vector.

This is first hand knowledge

The RPD kits usually have the demilled receivers with them. Couldn't they be welded up into a semi-auto build, like the Bren parts kits on Weaponeer?

I guess one could try....but finding US parts might be a bitch.

I think the atf rule on demil receivers is ..."once a full auto, always a full auto"

once it is demilled it is crap metal. You are manufacturing your new reciever out of scrap metal. Just dont reweld it into a machine gun. Make semi mods as you progress in the welding steps.

RPD 80% RECEIVER

I was talking to a guy at knob creek who was walking around with an RPD (Vector) who said that building a semi RPD was every bit as difficult as I have come to find. If you were a class 2 and just built it to spec, open bolt full auto; from one of the prexis 80%'ers it would be moderately easier I assume.

yep...making it back to a class 2 would be easier.....if u are going to do it into semi then u either need to get the atf approved way to do it or design it yourself and then submit it to the atf for approval then build
