I just put together my first AR. We own several but this was the first one I'd built. I put a spent 5.56 casing in the chamber to check it all out and it seemed good, but when I tried to pull the bolt carrier back it wouldn't budge. I did some research and I tried slamming the stock on the ground to force the bolt back, but that only succeeded in moving the bolt back about a quarter of an inch. it won't move anymore. In my research I found that if might have something to do with a loose gas ring. Would that be correct? What can I do?

You will need to start at least 3 more threads in order to fix it.

This is a tech forum, so peanut gallery comments wont help.

Are you able to separate upper from lower? you may need to try the FA to re-seat the bolt/bcg.  remove the upper, put it  in a vice, and tap at the bcg from the bottom side with a mallet.  also if you have a quality rod, you could try to insert that from the muzzle and tap at it with the mallet to unlock the bolt.

Agreed... What probably happened is the spent casing is too large because it expanded to the chamber size of the rifle it was shot with (unless you resized? it prior to putting it in the chamber).

A rod down the barrel will not unlock the bolt, all you will succeed in doing is beat up the locking lugs.

Remove both pins, slide upper forward and up off of lower. Remove the sights and lay the upper upside down and try to carefully place a wooden down against the part of the bolt that would trip the auto sear in an FA gun. Tap it carefully until it unlocks from barrel, then it should slide out.

edit to add: missed the part in quoted post about tapping from bottom.
