I took off the gas block and muzzle device of my modern sporting rifle as part of the install of a new handguard and noticed some strange bumps around the lip of the barrel. They are caked on pretty good, looks like powder residue. I don't want to damage the barrel trying to clean it off, I tried some solvent and a scouring pad, with little results. Any tips? Does it even matter?

That doesn't look like carbon build up to me. Those bumps are part of the barrel. I very well could be wrong but i bet that barrel is hammer forged and those bumps are remnants of that process. The crown on the barrel looks good too.

I want to see the inside the the muzzle device.  It's possible it's erosion (or deposition).  I don't think it's anything other than metal.

OP, got a pic of that?  And are you shooting suppressed?

ETA, here's an A2 that I ended up cutting off.

Its just carbon buildup, in a pattern based on the flow of gas inside the muzzle device. Just leave it... aggressive attempts to remove it might accidentally damage the crown.

I don't think the barrel had those bumps before, can't be sure. I've only 330 rounds through this barrel. I'm not shooting suppressed (wish I was) but I live in IL, thankfully not Chicago though.

Attached are pics of the muzzle device. Looks pretty clean to me.

That seems most likely to me. I don't remember any bumps being there before, and I'm concerned about damaging the crown/ruining the accuracy of the barrel.
