| I'm planning on purchasing an AR within a few weeks. What should I do before taking the first shots? Complete disassemble and cleaning? Field strip and quick lube? This is all new to me. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks. |

Complete cleaning including chamber brushing prior to your first shot
If I was in the market I'd look closely at the Colt 6970 for $800, I personally enjoy a nice pencil barrel for what I usually use it for in the field. PSA Colt 6970 |

Love me some SOCOM, at least I love mine!!!!!!! I always recommend a complete strip, clean, lube and reassemble, rifle, pistol doesn't matter, just a good practice to get into. You can never clean to much, lol!!!! As for what to use? I highly recommend Mil-Comm products. I have used Hoppes 9 and LP for years. A couple years ago I had a lot of spare time recovering from surgery and did more research than anyone should ever need to do, but I learned a lot. In the end I settled on Mil-Comm and haven't looked back. It isn't cheap, but quality seldom is. |

^^^^^^^^^^ OP you really cannot do wrong cleaning an AR, but whatever you decide to do, always make sure to run a rod or visually inspect the bore for obstructions before you fire it (you should do this for ALL firearms) |

PSA Colt 6970 I agree it's great price and great rifle, but it's an AR6720. ;-) |

With respect to cleaning, AR's probably don't need to be cleaned until several hundred rounds are put through it. Some folks, like to clean after every single round but probably not necessary. It's always a good idea to do a complete strip before shooting. Plain and simple, gives you time to hopefully spot any issues that QC should have caught but didn't. Also assuming the factory lubed it well enough for several hundred rounds as you put it, is a risk I don't recommend taking. What negatives are there in doing a complete detail strip and properly lube the components? There are non, what are the negatives of not doing this? There are infinite and many include physical pain. Just do it!!!!!
