I decided to invest in a couple of NiB BCGs mainly for easier clean-up. Boy am I disappointed .  After 250 rounds they look terrible (see photos) and definitely won't "wipe (or even scrub) clean."  I saw a couple of YouTube videos suggesting Flitz or Mother's mag wheel polish and a Dremel to clean them.  I tested a small area and Mother's and a Dremel seems to do the trick.

Is this a common problem with NiB?  If so, why isn't it publicized more? If I had known, honestly don't think I would have forked over the money.

Any concerns with Flitz or Mother's damaging the NiB coating?  I cleaned my parkerized BCG in about 10 minutes (if it's still dirty at least I can't see it).  I'm 3+ hours into troubleshooting these darn NiB BCGs.

How about clean it the best you can without going to extremes, lube it and keep on shooting it?

Frankly, that is just some tactical anti-reflective treatment.

If it slides smooth, why worry about it, it's cosmetic.

What manufacturer and where did you buy them?

New in Box, or Nickel Boron, they don't look like Nickel Boron, more like parkerized.

AIM Surplus v2 Nickel Boron (NiB) AR/M16 .223/5.56 BCG purchased two months ago.

Is it parkerized? Nope, it was sold as Nickel Boron.  Does it LOOK parkerized? Actually, worse. It looks like old tarnished silverware.  At least my parkerized BCG is a consistent color, looks good and was half the price.  Can I lube it and shoot it?  From what I read, yes. Will I purchase other Nickel Boron treated parts? Probably not.

I'm obsessive about keeping my AR's looking clean and polished and one of the selling points for Nickel Boron was "easy to clean." I guess it's like my car from high school: looked like crap but ran like a banshee.  Unfortunately, I'm much older now and wanted a nice looking luxury "ride."

The NiB is stained. The BCG is not dirty. It still retains its properties of being slick and easy to wipe clean. That's the point. Looking nice is a side effect. I sure wouldn't be taking an abrasive polish to a finish that is already applied thin on the metal. Especially on a dremel.

That being said - I've had 3 (one PSA, 2 AIM) and none did that. If yours feels rough to the touch, I'd contact AIM as that BCG has a lifetime warranty.

did you get it to function or be pretty? are you worried it wont shoot as well since its not all shiny? its just the nature of the beast. you buy a NiB BCG for easier cleaning (not polishing) and longer use without cleaning. You should not buy one just to show people the "purty" insides.

btw: i had a similar thread just asking if there was any way to remove the staining but spending 3 hours working on something that will have no benefit towards the functioning what so ever is just neurotic.maybe you can find some tips in that thread and waste even more of your time.

Here is a good read:

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2014/06/06/problem-nib-coating/

http://emptormaven.com/2014/02/the-problem-with-nickel-boron/

i've seen NiB coating under a microscope and its very porous. The website that was talking about this had to do with comparing NiB and Nickel Teflon as seen here: http://robarguns.com/blog/2013/08/23/np3-vs-nickel-boron/

I'm not an expert by any means, but I think these pores is what cause the staining.

Every NiB BCG I've used has stained, it is the nature of the beast.
