hi folks, i bought a new ar15 rifle and was wondering if it would be better to clean the factory "grease", or whatever it is, and re-lube it myself or leave it the way i got it? also, i wasn't planning on using this rifle right away and was wondering if you guys had any suggestions as to how i could go about storing the rifle for the long term. i don't have a gun safe. i was thinking of buying this
ZCORR Anti Corrosion Vacuum Tactical Rifle Bag http://amzn.com/B00A2THDSQ any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you in advance |

Always thoroughly clean and re-lube any new gun before firing it. Just in case you're new to AR-15s, you should know that in addition to a bore brush you will need a chamber brush. A dirty chamber can prevent rounds from fully seating in the chamber and can cause extraction problems with the spent rounds. |

Yes the rifle needs to be cleaned to remove the packing grease before use. That includes the chamber, bore and inspection of all parts.Ive seen all kinds of crap in new bores. You can clean it now and make sure it has a protective coating of oil on all parts or wait until you're ready to use it,thats up to you.Myself I'd clean it and inspect in now.
The storage bag would be a good idea if you want to keep dust and moisture away, but really isn't necessary. If you have kids you need to put the rifle in a safe place and out of sight such as the top of the closet etc..This also prevents any damage that may happen to the rifle such as being knocked over etc.. If you are a single person and security isn't an issue you can hang the rifle in the closet on the hanger rack/rod simply by the rear sling loop and sling drapped over a strong or HD wooden hanger. If all you have is the cheap plastic or wire hangers then use two or three, should be strong enough until you can get better.Just hang it up with your clothes. To conceal the rifle put a coat over the hanger/rifle.I did this for awhile when I lived in a rental and used heavy duty S hooks from Home Depot, and installed a locking door handle on the closet door. |
