Hi guys, new to ar15 platform. Just got a DPMS Sportical and was wondering what I had to do to break it in? Not sure if it needs breaking in or not either, again, I'm real new to ar15s. Btw I paid $740 for it and I think I may have paid too much. Any comments welcome. Thanks!
Also, I was going for the S&W Sport but the gun shop owner thought the DPMS was a better rifle because he said the DPMS had a chrome-lined barrel. After some research I've come to understand that the Sportical is not chrome lined. |
| Correct, the sporticle isn't chrome lined and it's an ok starter rifle IMHO. Really depends on what you plan on using set rifle for. As far as this "break in period", I'd just follow the manufacture recomondation and play it safe. just don't shoot lead/cast bullets within a couple hundred rnds. |
| I plan on plinking and hunting with it. I'm not LEO or Military, just a beginner civilian ar15 enthusiast. As for the gentleman that suggested I should sell it and save up for a better rifle, I kind of am stuck with it because I overpaid for it and it will be very difficult to sell it for $740 to another person. Any suggestions on what iron sights for this particular rifle? It seems that the rail on the gas block is a bit lower than the rail in the back. If anyone that has this rifle can make anysuggestions, it would be very much appreciated. And thank you guys for the comments. |

Also if there are any optic setups where I can switch from iron sights to optics, I would like to know about them. Thank you again Congrats on the gun, it will serve you well. Don't get hung up on the non-chrome lined barrel. It takes a lot of rounds to wear out even a non-chrome lined barrel. Just take a little extra care like you would on any gun to make sure you don't put it away wet. If you want to put a scope on it you'll need a scope mount. There are scope mounts with QD (quick detach) levers that allow you to remove the scope quickly an use the iron sights if you choose. There are also scope mounts that do not quick detach which usually cost a little less money. There are also Red Dot sights you can mount that allow you to use the iron sights at the same time. This is called Co-Witnessing. Take some time to read up before you buy. There is a lot of information here. |

Congrats on the new weapon, I have the same one and love it, as for optics I went with a Sightmark Sighmark SM13005, with Magpul BUS I have a true co-witness.
How I have only had mine for a few months and have had about 1000 rounds fired and I have yet to have a single issue. |

Just ordered a UTG front gas block sight and a magpul rear flip up sight. A single point sling, since the Sportical doesn't have a front sling attachment. Hope the UTG - Magpul sight combo was not a mistake.
Ps , thanks to all. The guys on the advice and warm welcome. I know it's not a Colt but it's all I could I afford that was available at my local gun shop. Hope this rifle serves me well; it will be used for hunting and plinking. The S&W is a better gun.
Even though it's not chrome liined it is Melonited. As durable and corrosion resistant as chrome. Actualy, I'm not totally sure that they do it on the new Sports (the ones without the forward assist or port door cover), they did on the older 1/8 5R barrels though. I don't know what prices are like in your area, but they are almost $200 less here. |

@ Unicorn
i was going in to the gun shop with my mind set on the S&W A15 Sport but my local gun shop owner, whose oppinion i value, said that the DPMS Sportical was better. he said it had a chrome-lined barrel, but after some research, i found out that it is a chromoly barrel. not a deal breaker and people make mistakes. the S&W Sport he had had a 1 in 9 twist barrel, this was contradictory to my research on the internet that said the barrel twist was 1 in 8. so maybe S&W has changed the A15 Sport since its introduction. and maybe the Melonite finish is no longer available on the A15 Sport either, i'm not clear on that. either way i hope i didn't get a lemon, as i'm sure most modern rifles are plenty good for my needs, which is plinking and hunting. don't care who makes it, as long as it works on a side note, I looked at a nutnfancy video and he really likes the Weaver Classic V-7 (model no. 849399) for a budget ar15 scope. |

Yeah, Smith cheaped out a bit with their latest Sports. I don't know if they are still Melonited either. Hopefully they are. You'll need a front sight that is taller by about a quarter inch (.27) to make up for the gas block being that much lower than the rail on the upper receiver. Only a couple companies make sights that are taller, and only a few companies make the taller gas blocks. Stupid and makes no sense to me why the companies make the too short gas blocks. Midwest Industries makes taller sights, but since you already have a front sight, if it's too low and you can't get it to zero, Yankee Hill Machine (YHM) makes a spacer to make up for that. |
