I've inherited this beautiful price of machinery last year... I've never fired it. I know nothing about it except its sexy, and the ammo I have has a full metal jacket??? My husband just moved and I'm completely alone. I went to give myself a basic lesson on filling the clip, putting it in the gun, and loading it. BUT when I cock it, the bullet doesn't go in.

Do I need to clean it?
Fix it?

Help!

Do yourself (and your neighbors) a favor and don't load it in the house. Take it to the range, and get someone familiar with it to show you the ropes.

It's not a clip, it's a magazine.

Is the magazine fully seated in the magwell? Have you applied SPORTS (look it up on google, with M16 afterwards)? Next time, load the mag all the way in until you hear an audible click of the interfacing with the mag release button with the magazine itself, slap the bottom of the mag upwards to ensure it is properly seated, then charge the charging handle, and see if it loads the weapon.

Please do this in a range or in a very safe direction, FYI. Make sure the safety is on the Safe part of the selector, too.

Or, even better, if you want to practice loading/unloading/chambering rounds, then get yourself a few snap caps.

Are you riding the BCG and charging handle forward ?  When you pull the charging handle to the rear let go of it, the action spring will do all the work. As stated above go to a range or if you live in the country go outside and have the rifle pointed in a safe direction. Take the time to read the manual if your rifle has one or check out all the great info here.

Best advice is to go to a range somewhere and ask someone who works their to help you, or find a friend familiar with the AR15 to teach you how to safely use it. You need to shoot the gun as well, before you try to use it for any kind of defensive purpose.

Take a basic AR class.  That will teach you all you need to know.

Yup, but sounds like your riding the charging handle and slowly releasing it opposed to just pulling back and letting go.

Troll trap is my guess....if not I'll feel bad.

If it's the latter do not attempt to load the "clip" or "cock" it, without being trained first. Please.

A class isn't a bad idea either. Hickok45 videos are good too.
