I got all the parts for my build now and wondering what would be good to strip off all the excess oil (glue) that comes from the manufacture. Some of the parts just feel really tacky. I was thinking I might just take some rubbing alcohol and strip the parts down and start fresh.

CLP & odorless mineral spirits.  Let them soak in that mix for a while

Newbie post alert! First black rifle with the whole build being a budget build including the entry level BCG, so anything I can do to ensure success first time out at the range the better.
The final piece (a PSA upper - M4 Premium - 16'' CMV CL Stripped Upper) is arriving tomorrow.

I've seen a post where there was "cosmoline" or some type of heavy anti-corrosion on the internals- and  saw in the same post the gas key of the carrier had what looked like grease or "cosmoline" substance on it. The  forum member indicated that the carrier was not cycling properly and someone commented if the upper had been cleaned (Inferring that that upper contaminated the gas key hence the gun not fully cycling).
I'd like to avoid this because a) sounds bad b) want the gun to fire and action work smoothly.

I plan to soak the BCG in Hoppes lubrication oil first then Rem Oil it (spray).
I also have Hoppes "Eliete Gun Cleaner" in addition to their normal cleaning solution, at home .. Brake cleaner scares me as I've seen how caustic that stuff is and it does effect plastics.

So my question is what will safely remove the 'cosmoline" and do I need to break down the brand new stripped upper to clean it or can I use Rem oil spray and clean lubricate all at once without removing the barrel, hand guard, gas tune etc.

Thanks in advance,
-Dave

your just going to waste a bunch of hoppes by soaking the bolt. if your worried about it just get some parts cleaner and get the oil stripped off and put on the hoppes. By the way rem oil is by far the biggest joke of a firearms lubricant on the market it drys up doesn't protect against corrosion and has about as much lubrication property as a glass of water. so keep it far away from your ar.

first id throw that remoil across the street into a ditch. use either hoppes, clp or non chlorinated brake cleaner to hose down all metal parts, punch the bore with a few patches soaked in whatever your using, get a q tip or a bore mop soak in cleaner and scrub chamber clean followed by a wet oily one and 1 or 2 dry ones down bore.

pull bolt out of carrier to do that assy and when ptting back together be sure to lube gas rings and inside carrier bore good. lube bolt carrier on bearing surfaces pretty heavily, not completely dripping but very wet. put bcg in upper, snap shut, insert mag, rapidly squeeze trigger until goofy grin comes to face and then continue till you run out of ammo. keep it lubed well and it will run very well dirty, filthy or clean.

most important part, be safe and have fun getting that dumb ass grin off your face.

eta: forgot to mention lubes. get some clp, mobil 1, froglube or something along the lines of a quality lube. in my experience remoil is very thin, evaporates very quickly and just doesnt work very well. however, ymmv.

Yup, iv used CLP for years. Its not the best but its definatly proven safe on all parts of your weapon.  When we got issued our spankin new cosmoline coated m16A4's in the marines right, before operation phantom fury, we had to strip all that gunk off them. What we found to work really well since we were doing alot of them all day for a long while, was a product called "goo gone". Some guys used a cup of fuel, and had pretty good success with that, (kerosene maybe)? But id advise just sticking to clp unless youve got some really stubborn crud. Then the goo gone will eat right through it. :)

Stuff like a lower parts kit comes with some kind of thick rust perventive. I usually put all the parts on some rags and hose them with braklleen or Gunscrubber. Then when dry I move them to some dry rags and hose them with Brakfree CLP. Blot off the excess and install the parts.

Thanks for the advice - worked great.
Disassembled the BCG
I used a combo of REM Oil and then CLP Powder Blaster cleaned up good, chamber, and barrel.
Then used Break Free CLP lube ... action cycled smoothly

And the smile is expected to last the week!  Grin is ear to ear
