First off, I do have an actual chamber brush, with the steel bristles on the top side.
I shoot a lot of steel ammo, and always am pretty prudent about keeping my chamber clean, to avoid stuck cases.  I haven't had one yet, so I guess i've been lucky.

My question is, what size is a chamber brush?  I was thinking about getting a nylon bristle one as well, so I could scrub my chamber really well.  Would this damage my chamber in any way?  I couldn't see it, but figured I would ask some others.  Thanks guys, L2

Don’t know the size offhand.
They make nylon bristle chamber brushes.

A chamber brush is effectively a 35 cal brush necked down at the throat and with a wide stainless steel bristle end to clean the lug area.

So if I use a 35 cal. brush, would it damage anything?  Nylon, not bronze.

Brownells stocks one that is a clone of the USGI, just in nylon. I like it. Nothing in there needs stainless steel to break it loose.

The GI chamber brush is made of fine bronze bristles which I have used for years and is really good for keeping the chamber in excellent condition. Just lube it after.

The part of the brush that could cause the most damage is the tip.  You want a rounded over tip like this:

rounded tip

not something like this:

snipped tip (at least that's what the pic looks like)
Anything with a snipped tip end could come apart easily and have sharp ended wire dragging across your bore is never nice!

I appreciate the help guys.  I have alway been a gun cleaning freak.  Now, I am starting to just do a little maintainance cleaning, and my chamber is one thing I feel is pretty important.

That said, I have always heard that you can wreck your rifle with cleaning rods and such.  I've never done it, and never want to.

@ctdemolay, I see totally what you are driving at here with the pics.  Is that what most are in reference to?

Thanks again guys, L2

Brushes always have a short live before they get all bent and just don't work as good as they use to. A couple years ago I ordered the set of synthetic brushes from Midway. They are blue in color and they are the best I have ever used. I am very anal about my firearms and am a cleaning junkie. I have used these a bunch and they still perform as good as they did on day one. I highly recommend them to anyone.

OP sounds like the brushes NCHornet described are the same ones as in my link. Again, check them out. I am very happy with them.

The description says they may be used several times before becoming worn.  You're saying they don't wear out.  How many cleanings have you done with said brushes?

I know what they say and I know what I have seen. They may wear in time but I have well over a 100 cleanings with these brushes and they are not laid over  like a brass or bronze brush would be. They still fit snug in the areas they are meant to clean. I am buying them for all the different calibers that I own.

Also being a fan of these brushes. I will second that they are durable. Take care of them.  They will last a pretty long time. Very nice quality.

I wasn't calling you out, if that's how you took it.  I was asking for information, which you provided.  Thanks, I'll have to pick up a set and try them out.  Tired of buying brushes far more often than I feel I should have to.

Sorry, didn't mean to come across like that. It's all good!!!  Get the AR 15 set it saves you a few bucks from buying seperate. I wish they would have a set for pistol calibers.

The Dewey chamber brush & rod are the ones to use as the rod has a bushing that will keep it centered in the receiver & bore, essentially serving as a bore guide for the chamber brush. Its very easy to over do it because you really can't feel what the brush is doing while you're twisting it into the chamber. The last thing you want is the front of the brush digging at the barrel's throat/leade.

Something to keep in mind when buying chamber brushes:  Mil-spec chamber brushes are threaded 8-36 while standard brushes are threaded 8-32.  Make sure you get one that fits the rod you plan to use.
