When shooting today the buffer tube became loose. My first group was under an inch, the last 2" plus, and had moved up and over about 3" with the same ammo. Would the nut cause this or is it something else?

no
the lower has nothing to do with group size because the bolt is always locked into battery when it isfired. the buffer assembly is just there for cycling the spent case.
