After many years of wanting an AR, I have finally got one.  Finding this lubing information will be invaluable to keeping my dream gun in good working order!
Thanks!

over at LF, many of the BTDT crowd advocate spraying down bolt, carrier, lower until its wet.  the lube of choice over there is Slip2000

I have a cousin that has BTDT and he hoses it down. Last time at the range he recommended
keeping it sprayed did it often.

This was immensely helpful.  I was putting oil all over the receiver, and over oiling the inside of the bolt and firing pin.  Luckily I only put 200 rounds through it so far, there was a ton of carbon build up already. It's good to know exactly where it's needed now and how much.

I like how Larry Vickers did it on his show the other day. He pored a gallon of oil all over and it seemed to work fine.

Thanks for the pictures of what and where my AR needs to be lubed. I just finished building my 1st AR, I already own one, but I built one cause it was something I wanted to do.  I wondered where I should oil and lube.  I had a general idea, but now I know for sure.  Again thanks.

I respect this is an old thread, however, I recently joined this forum. Not new to firearms, new to the AR15, your pictures are valuable information. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Quib,
Great information. Just got my are last year, and have only shot it twice.

My question is this:

I have a Hogan with np3 upper, lower and cbg.

I know that this material is not as porous as STD bolts/uppers.

Should I treat the same as STD metals or lighten the lube used?

Thanks,

Dave

Thank you for the great pics. I recently purchased my first ar15 and have been looking all over at stripping, cleaning and lubing. I was told I should probably give it a cleaning and lube before I take it out for the first time and never having one was nervous about stripping it down, which after finding a ton of info find it to be fun. But lubing I was still concerned about what, where, and how much to lube.I printed out the pics and plan on laminating them and keeping them on a ring as some one suggested in my cleaning kit.Any way thanks again for the great info.

I may as well share my ignorance on lubrication with my first build of a AR 15 in 300 Blackout. I could not get it to pick up a round or fire semi. I cut a couple links off the buffer spring, opened up the gas port hole from .108 to .111 then took a posters advice to shoot it wet, he said to soak it with motor oil to break it in. I was concerned with using oil in this cold weather but I liberally applied Break Free to the BCA and the action. After that it functioned fine. It is possible I did not have to open up the gas port hole but I will never know. I am eager to shoot it some after the oil dissipates and see if it still functions. I am not to concerned about damaging the rifle as an AR 15 can take a lot of abuse but lubrication should have been my first thought with my problem.

This is very helpful because although I can build an AR15 from parts with no issues I tend to forget proper names. "Drop some in that hole on the right side of the thing inside the gun that holds the pin." doesn't always help people.

I printed and laminated this and am going to tape it to my bench in the garage.

So I'm sure it goes without saying that there is no need to lube the inside of the upper receiver itself?
