So I just got a neat little cleaning tip that I thought I'd share with you all. The instructor of the carbine course I took had me use a large paintbrush to apply oil rather than a rag. It works a lot better, no lint or fuzzies, a more even coat, and you can really get into cracks and crevices like on rail systems. Thought I'd pass it along

why are you oiling your rail system?

what is the fascination with over oiling the AR platform?

I think he means just to clean with a dry brush. I hope.

I used one of these to apply oil to one of my A2 stocks to darken it up:

Bcause it makes it look so pretty?

All I oil is the BCG and FCG. Sometimes I'll take out the buffer spring wipe it down and slap a little oil on it. That's all folks...

I'm getting to the point that I want to paint all my rifles so I don't have to clean the exterior

Old underware makes good gun rags.  No fuzzy lint usually.  But I just squirt oil into and on the BCG.  Let the action spread it as needed.

Hmm,  I follow a little different rounte.  Before and after cleaning I hose everything off with a liberal amount of CLP then blow off all excess with the compressor.

I follow the GI procedure I learned ages ago and apply a LIGHT coat of lube to the outside surfaces of the gun.  Nowadays I use a 2" chip brush (per QUIB's suggestion) so that I get an even, very light coating everywhere.  I don't know if it's "essential" to lube the outsides of an AR's aluminum parts, but it can't hurt to do it very lightly, especially for storage.

I lightly oil everything. Corrosion does form on anodizing, after a while. But on the BCG as well, the bristles get into cracks and crevices that the rag and pinky can't.

I use a shaving brush as was pretty common in the military back in the 90's.   I have one for oil and one for dust.    Looks pretty much like this:

It's not overoiling, just a light coat of oil.

I don't oil the exterior of my rifles. BCG & FCG only. I'd hate having oil covering my entire gun. ymmv

It goes for you environment as well. How many of you are in the desert? I light coat of oil on the exterior on a dusty day will give you a nice coat of dust to wipe off. Just gets on everything and is PIA...

No oil on the exterior means no coat of dust...

Quality microfiber towels work great.  The good ones don't leave lint behind.

Yea but you gotta keep the skidmarks and dingleberries out of the BCG. You do not want those to wind up in a hot rifle!
