It seems that everyone has an AR-15 multi-tool for sale. Items either don't have great reviews or are sold out...
Midway: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=233390 Brownells: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=41685/Product/AR_15_COMBO_WRENCH_TOOL Rainier: http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=421 I'm new to this... Would someone mind pointing me in the direction of a quality tool for disassembly? I've ordered a GI cleaning kit - is there anything else I'm going to want for cleaning / maintenance? Thank you. |

I say just shoot! push your pins and use basic powder solvent and lube her back up... The carbon scrapers and perfectly fitted tactical tuna can openers/bolt carrier enhancement tools are often overrated. A nice strong toothbrush has served me well as a carbon scraper, pretty sure it is a green Hulk one too! You will find many little doo-dads in your garage or workshop to get into nooks and cranny's for the first few times your cleaning your rifle meticulously and making every part shine after 40 rounds... Soon you'll see that AR's run pretty well, and if you start really running your gun to it's limits you'll just come home from the range and dump the whole kaboodle in a bucket of gun soak and pass out for the night...lol Save the money on specialty tools and spend it on Ammo. The only non-build associated specialty tools I have personally ever used were a broken shell extractor and chamber stars. You can keep a small driver and wrench set in the box with your cleaning supplies and spare parts if your worried about your gun going down while at the range, but I doubt you would find anyone who might say, "Whoa! You really saved the day with your uber cool multi tool..." Think of your AR like a car, and bullets are like your gas. You will most likely overspend on your first one, but you'll learn what you want in your next one (and probably find it at a better price). You will have fun building/buying it, but the real fun comes from shooting it. Everyone ends up modifying something on theirs. It needs regularly scheduled maintenance and parts WILL eventually break. You'll put money into it that you will never see back, and whatever one you own today will not be the last one... |
