I'm building my first AR (6.8 based off of a Mega billet upper/lower, ARP 16.5" SS Pac-Nor barrel/bolt/carrier, YHM forearm/low-profile gas block, & Mag-Pul PRS stock) and it seems like the number of tools that are available are just as vast as the number of AR parts.
Could anyone please make some suggestions for some quality tools so that I have the right stuff when it comes time to assemble my AR? Here's what I know I need. . .barrel nut wrench, upper &/or lower receiver vise block(s), carrier key staking device, and a stock wrench, I have all the rest of the stuff I will need (screwdrivers, torque and hex wrenches, pliers, etc.). . .although I will also be getting a set of brass drift punches and brass/plastic hammer as well. Which barrel nut wrench, action vise blocks, and stock wrench would you guys suggest? I plan on getting the carrier key staking device from YHM. Thanks! |

Just a suggestion, you might consider skipping the key staking fixture at least until you get a look at the bcg, which I assume you'll buy assembled?
Personally, I wouldn't buy one unless I planned on assembling at least few dozen BCGs from scratch, but you know your own mechanical skills best. |

Thanks for the suggestion. . .I was going to wait until I knew if I needed it or not it should come assembled and it should already be staked. . .I'm just trying to cover my bases. I definitely don't want to spend money on something I won't need or won't be using.
What about a good action vise block, barrel nut wrench, and stock wrench? Will I even need a stock wrench if I plan on using a MagPul PRS stock? I don't know? Thanks again for the help! |
| I am almost finished with my first build (mega billet combo as well). I would get a model 1 vise block combo. You can get one from Midway and you get a vise block for the lower(which I did not use) and the upper(which you will need). you get both for around 40$. I really liked using the Brownell's bolt catch pin punch. It is 15 bucks and way too expensive for just using once, but a friend let me use his and it was alot easier to install without worring about maring the finish. You can get a pivot pin installtion tool from Midway for about 4 bucks(although not really necessary). A push pin tool is about 2 bucks and real handy. My tapco spanner wrench (7$) was plenty enough tool for tighting the caste nut, so I wouldnt get an expensive one. I do NOT suggest getting a multi-tool because tools weren't made to be messed into one hunk of metal. However, I am new to building an ar, but I have used tool since I was old enough to walk, so take that into account. |
