Ok. I got the Otis Tactical cleaning kit and first of all its great. It has most of the tools necessary to clean almost any weapon. However, I dont see how I can clean the lugs/chamber area??? It comes with a short 8"-10" flex rod but its impossible to twist a chamber brush without it binding and bending. I know some kits have a solid rod to use for that purpose but I cant find it available as a single piece. Am I doing something wrong?

I think I remember some Otis instructions that describe a method of using one of the flex rods with a wet patch, and slowly twirling the patch around the lugs and chamber area to clean them....

Personally I just do it the old fashion way with a GI chamber brush.  You can use the small GI rod section for this, but Otis makes a Brass scraper kit with two small brass rod sections and various pics, scrapers, brushes.  It still fits in the Otis tactical case and I've found it to be a nice add on.

Here's a link Otis Scraper Set

FYI, the threads on the Otis brass rods in this kit are commercial 8-32 threads, so you will need to use the NATO 8-36 thread adaptor that comes in the Otis tactical kit if you want to use a GI Chamber brush.  Alternatively  you could get a Chamber brush that has commercial 8-32 threads, but why bother.

Otis sells a one-piece aluminum rod for cleaning the locking lugs.  And if you watch the DVD that came with your cleaning kit you will see them clean the locking lugs and breech with it.  To get it to twist and do the cleaning, you need to insert the short brass rod in the hole at the non-threaded end of that aluminum rod.  The short brass rod is in your kit.  (I never knew what it was for for a couple of years.)  Best of all, call Otis customer service and they will send you that aluminum rod for cleaning your breech and locking lugs.  It works well.

Dewey sells a nice chamber cleaning kit for the AR. Look at Midway or Brownells. It has a brass non-rotating rod, and a chamber brush. Works really well and is fairly reasonably priced. IFRC.

I didn't know they gave a rod out for free...nice find !

That reminds me, if you use the brass rod sections that come with the scraper kit, you'll want to screw on the obstruction remover and insert the short brass T handle peice that came in the tactical kit.  This will give you the leverage you need when turning the chamber brush.

Good call out. Thanks.
