Took off the extractor spring to clean and replace with new Wolfe spring.  I can't seem to get the spring to go back in straight, and stay in.  Trying not to bend the spring.

Is there a trick to this?

make sure the larger end of the spring is going into the recess in the extractor, then "press' the spring into the extractor recess by pressing it against something hard, ie a table, piece of wood, etc etc

If all else fails, use a pair of pliers to press it into the extractor until it snaps in.

I use robogrips from sears w/ the rubber jaw covers, one of their many convenient uses.

I just insert the spring in the extractor and push it into the bolt recess with my thumb. When it lines up with the pin hole, slide the pin in.

I just installed a new heavy duty spring yesterday.  I had trouble pushing it in using a desktop, so I finally put some electrical tape on my pliers and pushed it in.

That being said, is it possible to get a spring wedged in there at an angle, instead of straight?  I'm not real comfortable with the looks of the one I installed, but it's been running OK so far.

I'm not military or LEO, but I'd like my ARs to be SHTF-ready if possible.

I usually take a Dental pick and press the bottom coil down so it's sits flat. What alot of people don't realize is that if that bottom coil gets cocked the spring isn't going to have enough travel room.
