why does it have a through hole in it? I would like to replace my slotted upper butt screw with a hex head alternative, for aesthetic reasons, and in the process noticed the stock screw has a through hole....

Still confused......if the through hole is for gas air release, how much gas/air are we talking about? I can't see any from the gas system itself finding it's way back to the buffer tube, the rear of it at that. As far as keeping compression pressure down during cycling of the buffer and spring-the buffer is not an air tight fit....
At this point I am simply curious, not looking for one of those interminable hissy fit threads to get started. |

I read that it causes problems in the sandbox as when there is a sandstorm the guys/gals would stand with their back to the wind and the sand would just work its' way into the buffer tube. A real bummer if you ask me but maybe Quib can give us a reason for it. unfortunately that ain't going to happen |

And last, that above is almost too funny when you consider that that freeking talc dusty sand gets into everything anyway during a sandstorm much less that stupid hole in the butt. You have no idea how much sand blows making noon day night dark and dust getting into you, clothes, radios, food, weapons, sights............that hole makes no difference at all in those conditions. |
