How often should headspace be checked in AR15's?

Also, why is it necessary to remove the ejector in order to check the headspace? Why is it different than seating a normal round in the chamber?

Maybe if you change out your barrel and/or your bolt you should check the headspace.  Otherwise don't worry about it.

You need to remove your extractor because most headspace gauges don't have a cutout for it and that would interfere with the gauge fitting.

You can use a USGI Field Headspace Gauge to to check for the absolute worst case headspace. It tests the max allowable headspace for service. It has no rim on it, so you do not have to remove the extractor and ejector. They are $35.00 from:
