The bore cleaing rod that I have been useing for 7 years is made by 'Pro-Shot' Products Inc. The rod itself is 36" long with a yellow plastic rotating handle. The rod is coated with either plastic or nylon but has a few inches of the coating striped off from a sharp wire ejector in my Marlin rimfire bolt gun.
I need a New cleaning rod... Looks like there are 2 types to consider: A 'Dewey' nylon coated one piece rod that cannot scratch the rifling and a, 'Tipton Rod' which is a lightweight carbon fiber rod which is billed to NOT get embedded with grit or flake off like coated rods do. I don't know much about carbon fiber but it is supposed to be stronger than steel but I don't know what that means...exactly. Being stronger than steel, does that mean carbon fiber would dull rifling, scratch the bore or eventually after repeated use damage something in the barrel? Sounds like the carbon fiber rod is the only way to go. What do you think about the Tipton Carbon Fiber cleaning rod for repeated use in an AR? How about a good AR15 specific Bore Guide? I've heard that the nylon/platic guides break. Looking at the Brownells catalog I see J.P. Enterprises aluminum guide that has 2 o-rings that look like they would help to keep the guide properly aligned, but idunno? Which bore guide are useing? Which bore guide do you recommend? Thanks Much, I appreciate it. -VonBarky- |

I have a Tipton rod and personally, I would say it's a little better in quality and construction vs. my Deweys.
As far as rod guides go, the only one worth a damn is Lucas Bore Guides. They have an insert in them that very closely fits the rod and will not allow it to flex and touch the rifling. |
