I have a preban Bushmaster LO44XXX and I bought a new grip and the supplied screw will only go in a turn or two and then stops. I can't for the life of me find the original screw, but i am thinking they may be a different size?? I would think this was a universal size, but maybe older models had a smaller screw diameter?

What brand of grip Magpul and Tangodown screws will have locktite applied to them already. Depending on the type of grip you will want to use the screw supplied with it.

Remove the grip
, Pre fit the screw by hand threading the screw directly into the grip block,  so you can  see whats going on. Will make it easier to determine if you have the wrong screw without the grip on there. Make sure you don't cross thread, steel screw into alloy,...steel wins.

All AR lowers use the same thread pitch

Also remember when swapping out grips, you have the selector switch spring ( in grip ) and detent ( in lower ) make sure they are reinstalled when swapping out grips. The selector detent will fall out sometimes, its a small part and if you are not careful you will have an oh shit moment.

Yeah, MAKE SURE you are not cross-threading the screw.

The Magpul grip screw uses loctite paste on the threads rather than a lock nut.  The problem is Magpul applies about 3x as much as is necessary to do the job.  Scraping the excess threadlocker off the threads greatly helps installation.  Go slow and if you feel the screw bind before bottoming out, STOP, unscrew, clean the threads and try again.
