What happened to my beloved fruity smelling, shake before using, milky white formula?

I  was introduced to the M16 at MCRD in 1988 and that cleaning stuff brings back memories...what up?

Old mixture was rather bad for your liver. It was changed maybe a decade or more ago.

There have been three formula changes at Break Free since about 1988 from what Ive been told by Don Yoder at Break Free..
The first was in the late 1980's where they had to decrease the amount of solvent in the CLP to meet the low temp requirements. So one of the solvents was removed that increased viscosity at sub zero temps..
Break Free was then required to go non-chlorinated in about 1993 by the govt..So the chlorinated solvent was removed causing the CLP to have less solvent and more oil content.Changed the odor completely IMHO and less cleaning ability. They had already been shipping the non-chlorinated to Europe(green laws-chlorinated solvents is bad and not allowed over yonder) so the newer formula hit the market rather fast in early 1994,or there abouts.
In about 2000 Break Free upgraded the inhibitor package to meet the newer "E" spec corrosion requirements which gave the CLP a green color. Its light sensitive and goes back to amber in the sun. They also increased the oil content in the liquid CLP with the solvent cut back to about 9%.The newer stuff has a slightly thicker viscosity as a result and I have yet to see any PTFE in the CLP in the last couple years or so..
If you want the stinky Break Free then buy the aerosol as its about as close to the true mil-spec CLP,or "D" formula as you can get commercially from them.Or at least that was the case a year or so ago when they had the MSDS's available for inspection online. The aerosol has a higher solvent content so it cleans a bit better, but evaporates off rather fast too.
I personally loved the old chlorinated CLP as it flat out cleaned well and lubed good. But it was some nasty stuff, stinky too. That being said I do like the viscosity of the newer liquid CLP and it works perty darn good. Its pretty close to the original CLP in that regard.
If you want the same viscosity as the original CLP of the 80's then buy the Break Free LP.Im told that it has the exact viscosity(base oil) of what we use to see back before the newer "green formula" came about.

Stinks!

How can anyone say CLP stinks!

For me, that smell takes me years back to the time of REFORGER, FTXs, Armsroom Inspections, Weapons Qualifications…….
