Got my first AR and shot it earlier today for the first time. I field stripped it cleaned and lubed it before i shot it. Now ive field stripped again and am about to clean it up till next week or the week after. Im used to glocks so i know im going to need more oil then 7 drops but i usually clean my glocks in the sink with soap water and hoppes will that be ok with my Stag? Can i clean the upper in the sink with brush soap and water etc. then just make sure to oil everything good after it completely dries? I put a desk fan on them overnight to get them dry fast and keep water from sitting on them.
Ive been cleaning my glock handguns and M&P's like this for years and have never had the slightest problem with rust etc. Will this be ok or will i be hurting something? thanks. |

I would not advise doing it in the sink. Several small, easy to lose parts vs your standard frame/slide/barrel/guide rod/recoil spring pistol arrangement.
I don't get the soap and water thing? Are you trying to eat off your pistol? I just use CLP and a rag or paper towels. |

Just seems like i get them alot cleaner with water and hoppes and soap. Maybe im just a perfectionist lol i just dont wanna mess anything up on the parts of the upper that arent taken out. Like taking off some special lubricant or something. |

You won't mess anything up, but like I said there are some very small parts that would go down a drain if you're not careful. Mainly I just wipe stuff down, scrape carbon off the bolt with a knife and lube it back up to go shoot again. thats prob what ill end up doing but if im not gonna shoot for a while i like them cleaannnn lol. yeah i have a screen i put in the bottom of the sink so i dont have to worry about parts going down the drain. Thanks for the quick reply man i appreciate it. |

Using hot water and dish soap will get everything very clean. I've used the method many times on dirty guns (mostly Glocks). If you're careful to remove any small parts, there's no worry about losing them down the drain. It will also remove all or nearly all of the existing oil, which isn't necessary or desirable, IMHO.
That being said, I think the how water and dish soap method is probably overkill and will get the weapon cleaner that it really needs to be unless you're preparing for a white glove inspection. I find that running the AR wet will normally keep crud suspended in lubricant and rags or paper towels will get most everything clean enough that I don't worry about a little residual fouling. I use foaming bore cleaner in the bore, a little brake cleaner to spray out the upper and once in a great while, the lower as well. Make sure to use the chamber brush and keep the chamber clean. I've found that many chambering and extraction problems are a result of a dirty chamber. The BCG gets soaked in Hoppe's or mineral spirits/CLP and wiped down while inspecting for unusual wear. The AR is really a pretty easy firearm to maintain if you keep it well lubed and clean it periodically. |
| ok cool thanks for the reply's. Im not planning on doing this everytime but every once in a while i like to get it just about as clean as it was when i got it. Guess it gives me some kinda personal satisfaction to have all clean guns lol who knows. I keep my car spotless too and carry quick detailer and a microfiber towel in my car for puddles and bird crap i think im just ocd about keeping things clean lol. |
