I just picked up my first AR (Bushmaster M4A3) and want to take it out this weekend for the first time. Can I just go fire as-is? I asked the guy at the store where I bought it, and he said fine, but I remembered reading that it is smart to clean before the first firing.
I also remember reading that it should be cleaned and inspected after the first round is sent through it. Is this necessary as well? Thanks a lot, Chris |

Quoted:
Strip it, clean it with Hoppe's, get all the factory oil out, make sure the bore is clean, lube the bolt carrier generously with Breakfree LP, firing pin lightly with Breakfree CLP, everything else with CLP. Go shoot. +1 It’s always recommended to field strip, clean, inspect, lube, reassemble and function check a new rifle. Off the shelf, a rifle is not in the condition for operation. |

I just completely cleaned my new rifle (or the one being built) in anticipation for the first range trip. I still need a rear BUIS but after that I will be ready to go.
I just cant decide if I want to go with a flip up or a carry handle. With the prices of good optics I think a optic system is a long ways off. |

let me tell you a story to drive home checking your barrel.
when I first got into Ar style guns I went kinda wild and was buying anything to test and learn. I ended up getting a blackthorn upper and threw it on.. Something happened and I did not go shoot that DAY. I was doing a monthly on my goto guns, realized I still had that one together and did once over on it and found a bur of metal from the gas port going into the barrel. Now I dont know if it would have gone bad or not but most likely it would have hurt me. That bur was damn impossible to get out by normal methods but I got it.. I have not shot that upper yet.. I have not decided if it needs to be thrown away or worked.. I can not sell it in good conscience until I know its safe but I am too embarrassed that I have a blackthorn upper in my closet to send to anyone who I trust to work on it... |

I was at the arnage the other day and a dude walks in with a brand new bushmaster and brand new Colt 6920. The Bushmaster was in the carrying case that it comes with and the Colt was in the box.
I watched him take the Colt out of the plastic wrap that it comes packaged in. He proceeded to jam his way through a few rounds. He went go the range owner. "I don't know why it's jamming. It's new...." Yes clean new guns because they come with preservative stuff on them that is the opposite of lube. |
