I just got a 22lr conv kit and was reading around and have learned that I will get lead fowling in the gas tube. So my question is if I squirt some bf bore foam in the tube when i clean the rifle, and blow it out with compressed air will I be good to go? THANKS |

The best way to prevent lead build-up in your barrel gas port, FSB gas passage, and ultimately in your gas tube, is at the end of your plinking, to swap out the .22 conversion for the standard bolt and fire some .223/5.56mm ammo. This will rid the gas system of lead build-up. My sons rifle was built for him to train with, using an Army M261 conversion kit. I left the gas tube in place, and we used the rifle solely for .22 practice. I knew what I was in store for. When the time came to swap over to the standard bolt, we had to disassemble the FSB and gas tube. The barrel gas port was entirely plugged with lead build-up, as was the FSB gas passage, and a small section of the gas tube directly behind the FSB. The FSB and the barrel gas port were easy to clean out. The gas tube required heat. I had to melt the lead from it using a lighter. This pic shows the FSB lead build-up.
