This rifle ran fine at the range yesterday. Go figure. BSW

Missing a carrier key screw, and the one that is there isn't staked.  I'd get it squared away, because it won't work well for long.

What brand by the way?

Its staked, just not correctly.  Looks like the early "single stake".  Is the first screw missing, or sheared off?  Id replace both and stake them to current specs.

Yup...I had that happen on my old Armalite.Mine actually stopped running when the ket took the gas tube out.
Personally I just replaced all of mine with properly assembled LMT BCG's...no more problems.
Quib has a do it yourself staking thread somewhere around here. All a man needs to know on the subject.

Forward screw is missing its head. What you see in the hole is the fatigue cracked surface where the head broke off.

Not really sure how long ago this happened. Don't remember where I got the BCG from but it has about 2.5 k rounds thru it. It came with the crap side staking and I restaked with a center punch.

Yep, I'll be ordering a couple sets of gas carrier key screws and a spare gas carrier key since I discovered last night I don't have any. I am anticipating much joy trying to get the broken off screw out.

Perfect example of why you do a good PMCS when you clean.

You just never know what you might find.

I now see the concept of grade 8 fasteners being worth the money.

Good thing you found that now!

Update:

Replacement gas carrier key screws came in this morning. Midway had them and offered USPS Priority Mail.

Leading screw came out just fine. Leaving me with this.

Detail of the broken screw. It turned right out with a pair of pliers.

New screws installed and staked.

And just because I know somebody is going to criticize my staking job.

I rarely drill broken bolts and screws. Usually a small hammer and a sharp punch will turn it right out. No fuss or muss.
