Is there a good way to keep an AR in the trunk of a car for extended periods of time without it rusting?

The gun is NOT stainless and it MUST be in a case.

Put an AK in the trunk and it won't matter if it rusts or not...

Put renewable dissicant (like the type you have in a guns safe, and can bake when it gets saturated) and keep well coated with CLP or LSA.

I'd reconsider the case and consider a gun sock - the foam in most cases really holds humidity something fierce.

Or get a high dollar pelican water proof case, and throw some one-time dissicant in there. No humidity will get in.

Do this: www.johnnorrellarms.com/molyresin_tips.asp to the barrel other steel parts.  (You don't need to blast parkerized steel parts--just degrease and spray.)  I've done barrels and fire control components with great results, and IIRC Stickman has even done BCGs.

Corrosion Resistance:
Moly Resinâ„¢, when applied to bare sandblasted cold rolled steel will pass the test procedures for salt water spray at 1000 hours, salt water immersion at a minimum of 1000 hours, accelerated salt spray test equivalent to 30 years marine atmosphere exposure, and 60 days sea water immersion.

Put a light coat of Breakfree CLP (or maybe LP) on it every few months and--if the bore is not chrome lined--keep a very light coat of oil in there, too.

put closed cell foam in the case (army sleeping pad), put the gun in a treated sock or sleeve.  and throw a couple decatessants in the case

Keep it lubed, and check it often. If you are doing what I think you are, you should be checking it approx every 10-15 days anyway.

Either Johnson paste wax or neutral shoe polish. Keeps guns from rusting in the field. Don't see why it won't work here!

Laugh at my Mini if you want, but if the gang of four ever tries to jump on me whilst I'm changing a tire, they get 30 rounds of XM193 in 30 seconds.

Eezox

Eezox works in Houston to keep badly blued carbon steel trunk guns from rusting.  So unless you are driving around actually underwater in the surf, you should be fine with thoroughly dry Eezox.
