Which Dewey Rod do I need the coated one piece or the one piece brass?
Which length does it need to be? I was also going to get a guide.
I have a S&W M&P and a DPMS SASS.  I was thinking a 36" for both when using the
guide?? Looks like they come in 24",36", and 40" for 22C and 30C rifles.

Dont mess with the Dewey. Get a Tipton carbon fiber rod. The carbon fiber wont allow foreign material to become imbedded and the coating of the Dewey rod has an annoying habit of flaking off and then its just a steel rod and you have a bunch of red shit in your gun.

I use a GI issure Clean kit  - METAL ROD

It wont hurt any AR15 with a CL barrel

I also have a dewy and OTIS

but mostly use the GI

That would be the Teflon coating that flakes off of Dewey rods all to easily.

Red Teflon coating?

Pretty weird considering that the Dewey coating is BLACK NYLON, not red Teflon.  I have seen a few cheap coated rods with red coatings that flaked off.

My Dewey rods are about 5-6 years old and still going.

OP,
If you select a Dewey, get the 36" 22C male threaded rod for a 20" rifle with a rod guide.

Kleen bore uses red coating.

Dewey is black.  The 36" rod is the min length when using a bore guide and solvent port.  For a 20" or 24", I think I would get the 40".

Dewey makes the best cleaning rods IMHO.  Sure the coating after 15 years has been scratched a bit, but it is not flaking off like the Kleen Bore brand does.

BTTW. . .Not sure if I read it hear in this post, but the actual carbon fibes are harder than steel.  The plastic filler they are held in is not, but it is not significantly tougher than the Dewey coating either.

The tipton rod is reserved only for my bolt action rifles. If my AR's could shoot under 1/2 MOA I'd give them all the TLC my bolt-guns get. My AR's get regular gi cleaning kit steel rods.

I use Dewey and that's it. I've never seen one peel but you can nick them. If you use a bore guide (Iuse a Stoney Point AR-101) then there would be no reason for any nonsense of peeling or serious gouging as it won't be touching anyplace except the bore and where it exits the muzzle. Even then unless you’re abusing it it'll last forever.

Minimum go with the 36" if your running a shorter (16") barrel but if you can accommodate it go with the 40" rod. This way you'll be able to use it later on if you ever had a bolt gun with up to at least a 26" barrel. 40" seems quite long but you'll appreciate it down the road

I just bought 2 new 1 piece BRASS Dewey rods. I think they work pretty well, and I know they won't scratch my bore. Also no flaking of coating like me Tetra Pro-Smith rods did

Ditto what Jammer1 says. I think you'll like the Tipton better. The handles have nice ball bearings to allow the rod to turn freely with the rifling. Dewey makes a good rod in my opinion but I think Tipton makes a great one. MidwayUSA.com is they place to get them.

Why 36" so long a rod? My AR's have a 16" and 20" barrel.

Add in the length of the receiver and rod guide plus some extra...
