| Ok, so I've lurked this forum for over a year or so to the best of my recollection. I've only had pistols up untill recently, I'd been interested in acquiring an AR-15 while they were still legal and finally made the decision with an RRA R4 (Entry Tactical). To be completely honest, the overwhelming complexity and diversity of topics on this forum have always overwhelmed me but I'm finally starting to catch on, however this forum and this gun have severely humbled my my gun-ego. In the past with auto pistols I've always been annoyed by lint from cotton pads of multiple flavors leaving some degree of lint/debris, but nothing I couldn't eventually get past. While cleaning my new AR last night after what seemed hours of tedious spraying, wiping, wetting, drying, etc, etc, I ended up trying to wipe down the outer surface with hoppes or CLP, the end result being a hideous film of ridiculously excessive lint left from the cotton pads. I don't know if it's just the coarse finish or what, but it is driving me ******* nuts. WTF am I doing wrong? There must be some stupid oversight or reason for this but I can't figure it out for the life of me. If anyone could offer some tips or insight into this dumb problem I would be forever grateful. I would very much appreciate any help offered! |
| I'm also new here (to posting, lurked awhile too). I took my new AR out last Saturday and ran about 50 rounds through it. I took it home, stripped and cleaned it. I used Hoppes #9 and gun oil, some cotton swabs, and a cleaning patch (for the barrel). I used an old cotton towel to wipe down the excess oil. I didn't have any lint problems that I noticed, so it might be the type of pad you are using. |

Alright, this is really pissing me off now. It's only a problem on the outer surfaces due to the coating/finish I assume, never had this much trouble with any other guns. Same problem with Kleenbore cotton pads, a cotton rag and a (rayon?) silicone cloth. I might have to try the black t-shirt thing but just knowing it's still there will still bug me. Suspect I'll just have to get used to it. Thanks for the link Quib, going to run out and see if I can't find a decent paintbrush to try out. Much appreciated! |
| i use a paintbrush to apply lube to the exterior of the gun then i use 'microfiber' glass rags to wipe down the excess, you can get the microfiber rags at discount auto parts for a few bucks they come in a 2 pack and they're meant for glass but i use'em on my gun since they dont even leave a trace of fiber's behind. |
You can get a 20 pack at Costco for something like $10. I use 'em as semi-disposable shop rags. Plus, they're a really cool bright yellow color. |
| Hmm... thanks for the suggestions guys. Will probably try them all. I tried spraying everything down with CLP then just blasting excess off with an air compressor which actually took most of the remaining lint off. I eventually got discouraged enough to accept imprefection and worked it around then threw it back in the bag and called it good... Perhaps that's the trick... |
