I just recently purchased a cleaning rod for my 308. It is stainless steel. Does stainless stell damage the barrel or the crown? Would I be better off with a coated rod or carbon fiber rod?

Many folks on this forum use the GI steel sectional cleaning rod (including Quib, one of the most respected members here) to clean their 5.56's.  Me personally, I use the Tipton Carbon Fiber rod for home and an Otis cleaning kit (with brass ends) for the field/range, I am too scared to put steel down my bore.  If your rod is one piece, I think it will be fine if you get a bore guide as seen on Midway.com since the .308 is a bigger diameter and allows for more error.

The GI cleaning rod is not my first choice for bench cleaning, for the field......sure.

For the bench, I use a steel, uncoated one-piece cleaning rod made by KleenBore.

I think the use of a bore guide is good practice no matter which rod you choose. I even use a bore guide with my Otis stuff. Of course some consider me slightly "tenacious", (to use a nicer term than some would), about cleaning.

I use
DEWEY
OTIS
GI ISSUE

Mostly use GI ISSUE

With a EXPENSIVE MATCH GRADE SS BARREL I might just use a DEWEY ONLY

But a M4 is chrome lined I have no problem useing USGI

I prefer the JP bore guide. As for cleaning rods, once I tried a carbon fiber dewey, I swore I would never again use anything else.

What makes the carbon fiber Dewey Rod so great?

They wont break like the sectioned steel rods, wont embed any material into the surface of the rod that could contaminate the bore (metal), and wont damage the bore and/or chamber lead. They also have a roller bearing between the handle and rod so you get a better feel with less friction. They arent cheap, but are worth every penny.

Correction, my carbon fiber rod is a Tipton.

I have been using a KleenBore one piece plain blued steel rod with the "T" handle for a couple of decades.....but on a whim decided I needed to upgrade to a fancy, 33" stainless rod, so I bought one, by KleenBore. What a mistake. For whatever reason, the SS rod is "soft" and will bend and distort unless force vectors are kept parallel to the rod. Doesn't matter how hard you push a patch/brush with the old el cheapo, it won't bend nor distort.
So, someone is getting a new cleaning rod for Christmas "08"..... YMMV

I've got two rods I use. For the AR's, it's an uncoated 1 piece stainless rod with a rod guide for security. Since chrome linings pretty tough, I'm not too concerned. For my bolt guns, it's the 1 piece coated Dewey. I will depending upon lazyness use the Dewey on the AR's, but since it's a fair bit longer, I dont like the flex, even if it is coated. The rod guide helps, but the damn things made for up to 24" barrels. My .30 cal coated rod is starting to unravel, so it hasent seen much use lately, hence the .22 cal Dewey usage. Need to get off my butt and get another rod

All my cleaning rods pretty much sit idle these days since foam bore cleaner and pull through string type cleaners have come into my life Does this make me a bad person
