I suppose this has been discussed before, but I was probably too busy learning the other basics of the AR15 to notice...  how, and how often, do you need to disassemble and clean the magazines?

I tried to disassemble one of my mags for the first time yesterday and I couldn't get it apart.   I pryed off the floorplate and pulled the spring down, but I couldn't get the green anti-tilt follower out of the magazine body.

Is there a link with photos around here somewhere?

Also, how much lube, .... what kind of lube inside the body?

Thanks in advance,

Jerry

I do a visual inspection of my mags after returning from shooting.

I shoot in some sandy/dusty areas. If they show no signs of interior dust or dirt I wipe them down with a dry cloth and put them up for storage.  And of course if they do show signs of interior dust or dirt I clean them as follows:

Thanks Quib, for the photos.

However, I was able to pry off the floorplate and pulled the spring down.  My problem was that I couldn't get the green anti-tilt follower out of the magazine body.

Is there a trick to getting the follower out of the body?

Jerry.

Magpul's anti-tilt followers are much easier to remove. The USGI green folowers require finagling of high order, more so than a M1 Garand's op-rod.

Thanks Quib, for the photos.

No problem.

It’s one of those things that’s hard to explain. It’s basically just a matter of tilting the follower in different directions until it can be worked out of the mag body.
