| Is there a "break in" process for a chrome lined Bushmaster AR? |
|
ARs do usually require a little mechanical break in (not to be confused with barrel break in). Make sure it's clean and that the storage/preservative oil is completely removed from the operating parts of the firearm. Lubricate generously with a lighter weight oil (CLP is good) especially the bolt and inside the bolt carrier, and then shoot it. Between 200 and 500 rounds is usually a good break in period. After that time the bolt should slide smoothly through its operating range in the BC, extractor the same, trigger/hammer/disconnector should be smooth and positive, and cycling the action via the charging handle should be smooth and not gritty, and with no ammo the bolt should go fully into battery even riding the charging handle and closing the bolt slowly. |

This is one of the best explanations of barrel break in I've ever heard. A chrome lined barrel may not be as critical as chrome molly but what can it hurt to be a little careful? http://www.kriegerbarrels.com/Break_In__Cleaning-c1246-wp2558.htm I have an old post of my AR's crappy groups on this site. I never broke in the barrel properly. I didn't know any better. As I began researching my problem, I began to suspect this was my problem. My bbl is chrome lined, I may be able to fix the problem using a good copper solvent. I'm not sure as I've gotten differing viewpoints. I haven't had the time to properly work out the problem. That should change this spring. |
