Hey all.  I'm picking up a number of new guns, all first ones for me (two pistols, an AR, and two 308 rifles).

I want a simple, effective answer to cleaning, and the guy at the store recommended the M-Pro 7 Tactical Cleaning Kit (details on this page: www.fsguns.com/maintenance.html )

Is this a good starter kit?  I don't want anything fancy, but I do want to keep good care of my new babies :)

Thanks,
BB

That's probably not a bad kit to get you started. I have several, but no one is the "perfect" kit.

Here is some of the stuff you need for ARs and hunting rifles:

1. A one-piece coated cleaning rod (Dewey or Tipton). I have one for my .308 and a smaller diameter one for ARs.
2. Patches
3. Solvent (I like Hoppe's No. 9)
4. Jags and patch loops
5. Stainless steel and nylon brushes. Get some of the AR brushes that have bristles on each end. The big end looks like a toothbrush
6. CLP. Breakfree, FP-10, Slip 2000 are all good. I use the FP-10.
7. I got some used dental picks at the gunshow. These are great for small areas like the AR lugs.
8. Many of us like to use the non-choloronated brake cleaner. It will not hurt plastic parts.
9. For your AR, get one of the carbon scrapers for inside the bolt carrier.
10. Invest in a good set of regular and roll-pin punches.
11. I have a Snap-On 3/16" t-handled Allen wrench to remove the pistol grip screw on my AR.
12. DPMS makes a good plastic insert to hold your upper in a vise if you do much AR configuring.
13. Brownell's sells a plastic and brass hammer. Get one for tapping stuff.
14. I bought the Otis Elite cleaning kit. It has all the brass bore brushes you will ever need in one kit.
15. I have a Surefire G2 flashlight that I use a lot to make sure the weapons are clean in the tight places.
16. I use Qtips like they are going out of style.
17. Brownell's and others sell a cleaning item that is great. It looks like a cotton ball on a metal stick (about 3-4" long). These are great for cleaning AR chambers.
18. I would also get a bore guide to insert into your AR chamber when you are cleaning the bore.
19. When your cleaning chores are done, some weapon wipes, like Breakfree, are nice to have to wipe your weapon down. You can alternatively use a silicon rag.

After you do this awhile, I'm sure you will come up with you own ideas on how to clean your firearms. I hope this helps.

Good luck mate.
