Ok, i am taking a stab here. By "small cog" do you mean the smaller lug on the extractor? If you do, just remember it has to ALWAYS point towards the ejection port side of the bolt (and i do mean always) (looking from back of carrier towards front is R/H for standard rifle and L/H side for lefty). The cam pin should not go in if the bolt is upside down (but, if either, or both, parts a worn, it may).

If that is not what you mean, then you will have to clarify for me (i am not always the sharpest stick in the forest). Hope that helped.

If you get lost, go to youtube.com and type AR-15 field strip.  There are several videos on how field strip your AR there.  One in particular is about five minutes long and is pretty good for beginners.  I happen to be a beginner and it was very helpful to me.  Some of the old vets on this site can don't it in their sleep, but I am a visual learner so the vids helped a bunch.  Good luck.
