I read through the stickied threads and didn't see my question answered. I got my first AR, a Bushmaster M4orgery, and it is a honey of a rifle.  The guy I bought it from said a good thing to do is put 2-3 drops Breakfree down the gas tube( after cleaning) and store the rifle bore down. I've heard you are never to put anything down the gas tube, but it seems the gas tube would get dirty. So what is the truth about breakfree down the gas tube?

I would refrain from putting anything physical down your gas tube, and I would not put CLP down it either. I will after cleaning, shoot a quick squirt of brake cleaner or Break-free powder blast down the gas tube, but never oil.

I don't even use brake cleaner in gas tubes. Clean the OUTSIDE of the gas tube, as per the TM. The mushroom on the gas tube will be worn out before it gets dirty enough to stop working, barring bad ammunition or shooting .22LR conversion kits. BSW

I prefer a short blast of carb cleaner in the gas tube. It can and will get fouled.

The gas tube is self cleaning, never put anything in there. The guy you bought it from, I wouldn't listen to him anymore

The gas tube should not foul with mil spec ammo but who knows about all the other stuff we shoot. A blast of brake cleaner after cleaning the barrel won't hurt anything and will flush out any bore cleang solvents that ran in through the gas port.

I've posted this same thing many times.
