I have a Stag upper flat top with Chrome barrel.
I have been using hoppes #9 to clean it, however
Someone told me that this could damage my barrel.

Is there a special way to clean it?

Hoppes #9 will not damage your chrome barrel, continue to use it if it gives you the results your looking for.

You're supposed to maintain those things?

Hoppes won't hurt it. Actually I've purposely abused one over the years. I'm fast approaching 20,000rds on it. Rock River CAR. Sometimes I don't clean the bore for weeks or months. Even after more than 500rds through it. No worries, it still shoots under 2" at 100 yards. Just shoot it and perform reasonable maintenance. As in scrub it every once in awhile and after shooting run a wet patch then a dry patch through a couple times. IMO over cleaning will wear your barrel out faster than under cleaning it.

I have over 1500rds in my Newish DEFENDER 2000 M4

Still only use CLP and patches

I have a Bushmaster wich had around 3000 rds fired and never used a Brush or copper cleaner  just CLP and patches in the Bore

Never seen any copper Build up on my AR15`s that are Newish  around 3000rds MARK

Love the chrome barrels and they can be Very Accurate as regular SS barrels

I like BRAKE CLEANER Non Chlorinated Spray down Rec,Lugs, Chamber,Bore
Makes cleaning a AR15 so much easier
