I heard stories that in Viet Nam, soldiers would take their bolt-carrier group and swish it around in a bucket of diesel fuel. Well, I was told by a shooter I know that Biodiesel is actually a pretty good solvent/cleaner for guns and doesn't corrode or leave behind a bad film that will cause corrosion. Anyone else hear about this? I made some a while back for some lanterns, as it burns REALLY clean in a Dietz lamp. I might try it with the carrier group and see how it goes. (it has much higher viscosity and better lubrication properties than does regular diesel or low sulfur stuff) |
Diesel is a decent carbon solvent, does provide a small amount of lubrication, and minimal rust protection. For gun cleaning, biodiesel has a few small advantages and is probably a bit safer than a petroleum based diesel (fewer aromatics). |
