I heard stories that in Viet Nam, soldiers would take their bolt-carrier group and swish it around in a bucket of diesel fuel.

Well, I was told by a shooter I know that Biodiesel is actually a pretty good solvent/cleaner for guns and doesn't corrode or leave behind a bad film that will cause corrosion.

Anyone else hear about this?

I made some a while back for some lanterns, as it burns REALLY clean in a Dietz lamp.

I might try it with the carrier group and see how it goes.
(it has much higher viscosity and better lubrication properties than does regular diesel or low sulfur stuff)

Diesel is a decent  carbon solvent, does provide a small amount of lubrication, and minimal rust protection.

For gun cleaning, biodiesel has a few small advantages and is probably a bit safer than a petroleum based diesel (fewer aromatics).
