A scraper is designed to remove the carbon buildup on the back wall of the bolt recess. You do not NEED one, but they make the job easier (provided you do not use the brush every time). If you use the brush ALL the way in against the wall, often, then you will not see much advantage from a scraper. Save your money and buy ammo.

I’ve never felt the need to BUY a carbon scraper, instead I made my own from a section of aluminum cleaning rod.

Some folks will tell you that the carbon build up is self limiting, and to a point it is. But if I can remove what doesn’t blow off through the self limiting action by using my DIY scraper, some CLP and a couple q-tips...........then why not.

I just got one from Brownells. item # 133-100-016BA. $22.45

Works great. Hell of alot better than the old USMC trick of using a stripper clip. When the carbon build up is really bad the stripper clip will just twist like a pretzle.

Its not something you need often. But if you shoot several hundred rounds between cleanings it sure helps do the job faster and easier.
