| Is there a "complete" cleaning kit from Dewey, or do you just order the rod and separate parts. For years I have been using the old multi-section cleaning rod kits and would like to upgrade to something better. I have been to the Dewey site, but still confused on what to order. |
| i have deweys chamber cleaning kit. and i have a dewey rod for the bore. the chamber kit has everything you need....rod, chamber brush, a chamber guide, and a lug cleaning tip that you can use the rolls of cotton that come with it. im pleased with the kit. but then for the bore you need to buy a rod which does come with the jag and loop. the rod i have for the bore ....cant rememeber the part number but it has a 36 in it. it is just a tad smaller then the 22 bore so it doesnt flex as much as most 22 rods do and it has a thicker coating over the rod to i think. i wouldnt trade my dewey stuff for anything else! |

I also get just the chamber cleaning kit (which works great, best price I found for the Dewey is at CheaperThanDirt.com), and the 30-inch Dewey rod with female threads (which is different from most Dewey rods and is nice because it lets you use normal jags and brushes by other companies without needing an adaptor). You can get the 30-inch Dewey rod for .22 caliber from MidwayUSA.com for around $25. As another alternative, don't know if you've considered the various OTIS kits (see Otisgun.com, although it's cheaper to buy them at MidwayUSA or CheaperThanDirt), but they are great. They use a flexible, pull-through style of rod that is much better for your bore and will not damage your muzzle. They even have version of these kits you can buy and store in your hollow buttstock, or within your pistol grip. I use Otis for most of my guns, and more often than not on the AR. It works great for normal cleaning, is much simpler than using rods, bore guides, and all that, and it's absolutely safe to not damage your muzzle. You can get the deluxe Rifle/Pistol kit, which gives you everything you need to clean almost any gun you own, for about $32. If you get Otis, you also need to get their all-caliber patches, make sure you buy a good supply of those, they're specially made for the Otis flexible rods. I would recommend getting the Otis for your primary cleaning, and when/if you can afford it later on, get the Dewey stuff for really heavy-duty cleaning occasionally if you get build-up in the barrel, etc. |
I agree with you about the brass, that's why for instance it's good to buy brass cleaning jags and brushes. But when it comes to rods, don't some of the cleaning solvents really attack that brass, which would then eat into your rod, pitting its surface over time and making it more likely to scratch your bore? I'm just repeating an issue I've read, I have not experienced it first-hand because I don't use a brass rod. |
