I recently purchased my first AR15 a few months ago, a Pre-ban '91 Colt Sporter (A2) I've built a small stash of Mags, Ammo & Cleaning supplies and now I would like to get some "Spare Parts" in case of another AWB, SHTF, etc. I can get "complete spring replacement kits" at places like C-Products, but could some of you experienced Arfcommers give me an idea of what I actually might need in the way of "Spare Parts" for my AR? I.E what's the most likely to break/wear out, etc. My Rifle is in "Like New" condition & I want to take good care of her... ![]() Thanks in advance, Dixie_Shooter "Molon Labe, Y'all!" |

A good basic small parts kit with the normal pins and springs is always good to have on hand. These kits from Bushmaster are a good place to start. www.bushmaster.com/shopping/lowers/afield.asp www.bushmaster.com/shopping/lowers/arpinpkg.asp |

Gas Rings. They wear out. Get a dozen for just a few bucks. Next I would just get a spare complete bolt carrier group, a spring kit, and a lower parts kit. For under 200$ you would then have about everything you need to fix almost everything less something major breaks. |

I don't claim to be a commando, just a chairbourn ranger that puts several thousand rounds through several ARs every year. I can't say that I ever wore out any parts but I have managed to lose or mangle several small parts/springs over the years as I was taking apart my guns (mostly for cleaning ). A spring kit is always a good bet , Fireing pin and the retaining pin for same . A spare bolt would be a good long term item . Ultimate spare part kit is a complete rifle ! I have several ARs so I don't worry much about spares other than small parts. I never had a rifle go tits up unless I had it apart and did something to it . Then again all my guns have been new or almost new factory guns with one lower build by myself with all new parts . If you have too many small parts as spares they have a way of ending up as complete guns ! |

Firing pin retaining pins. Firing pin. Extractor. Extractor spring. Disconnector spring. Disconnector. Bolt (I never broke one but it replace them every 5K needed or not) Bolt Cam Pin. Bolt Catch. Magazine catch. Charging handle (If you use a tac latch for one handed manipulations) |

You dont have to spend $200. Just buy the high impact and wear parts. I dont think cam pins break often since they are pretty beefy. I keep the following on hand. Oh yeah Rock River is giving free shipping on orders over $25 until December so I just ordered a few parts. Does anyone else replace their bolt on a regular basis. Why would you do this unless there is something wrong with it? Extractor w/ a couple springs and inserts Firing pin Firing pin retaining pin (lost easily) Gas Rings (they eventually wear out, buy the improved ones where the gaps cant line up) Ejector and spring (keep them oiled and they last a long time, put a drop of CLP on it and work it in and out with a cartridge) |
