Got a patch to miraculously jump off the rod while in the bore, jamming the rod in place mid bore.  Needles to say I got pissed and banged it out.  I put the barrel on a towel, flash hider down and banged on the handle of the rod until it came out.  a chip size ammount of the red protective coating on my saf T cleaning rod came off so it obviously rubbed something probably the rifling. Do you think it will shoot 10 foot size groups now? or is it alright?  It's an older barrel anyway, I just bought the rifle it's 15 years old but I still hope it's alright.  Is there a way to avoid this in the future or a better way to handle it.
If it was my new upper Id be freaking out right now.

Hard to say. Get the bore real clean and look with a bore light and see if you can see any nicks or scratches. Also sheck the crown and make sur the rifle grooves look sharp. Now take it to the range and get some groups to know for sure. Good luck!

If it's a chrome lined bore you're likely without serious damage. Even if the rifling is damaged in a spot or two, the two biggest worries are crown and chamber. If those are ok, your accuracy should not be affected.

Next time make sure you lubricate the patch well with CLP. A coating of lubricant on the bore will never hurt. Also use the correct patch size, and never change direction midstroke. All the way in, all the way out.

Repeated metal on metal on the throat or muzzle can cause loss of accuracy over time, but what you describe sounds pretty harmless.  If the barrel is made of 4150 steel, or even 4140 it will likely take an oft repeated beating from a steel cleaning rod before you'd see anything serious.

Personally I would not lose any sleep over it.

thanks guys CLP sounds like a good bet. I was using a dry patch to try to clean up the rest of the bore cleaner.  Its got a 5.5" FH on it and it looks as if the previous owner couldn't really get to the crown as it has some build up carbon on it & it's hard to see.  I've been slowly tring to get it off with the bore cleaner.  The barrel actually looked like it had a couple nicks in it when I got it a couple weeks ago.  No new ones though I checked last night. Thanks again.
