I recently bought a 20-pack of 16-inch long AR15/M16 gas tube cleaners (i.e., 16-inch long pipe cleaners) from MidwayUSA (distributed by C.J. Weapons Accessories, Jefferson City, MO). Does anyone know how often one should run one of these down the gas tube, and with or without solvent? Given my time in the Army, I never saw any of these being used.

you dont... most people suggest to never clean your gas tube and that its self cleaning.

That's because it's not necessary. The most I do is spray a little Brake Cleaner down the tube during cleaning.

If the gas tube needs cleaning, replace it!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, itis akin to wiping vs.  a "deep cleansing high colonic with Vinegar and aromatic botanical oils + Yogurt"

In 20 years I have seen but one clogged gas tube, and that was caused by some seriously GARBAGE ammo that isn't availale to the public or Mil.

And frankly, the cleaning of the thing wouldn't have helped anyway!!!!!!!

It's laudable that a guy considers such details, but the little black tart needs love and attention in other areas more than this.

Keep her warm with Love and time at the range.

Kick out the larger chunks.

Q-tip the crevaces and slather her with a light and prcisely applied amount of lube.

The Gas tube is a "No Zone".

Leave Gas tube cleaning to Jerry Springer contestants and the overly decorated residential district in SanFran.

Don'tmake me come out and say it in public!!!!!!!!!!

Scrub the outside clean........
That's quite enough!!!!!!!

Folks, thanks for the feedback.  Looks like I will cut them up and use them for other cleaning jobs.

According to the American Gunsmithing Institute AR15 tape the #1 cause of plugged up gas tubes is pipe cleaners stuck in them by someone who didn't know any better!

Gas tubes are cheap and incredibly easy to replace.

If you feel that yours is clogged or if you are anal like me, just replace the entire tube with a new one every 20,000 rounds or so.
