I have been using bore snakes only since buying my first AR and my newest addition the Rem 700 VLS. Have really hated the idea of sticking jointed rods down these bores! I decided it's time I got into the Cleaning rods just don't know what the best length for each application is. Is there a good rule of thumb when choosing a rod? I was also thinking of getting the Tipton carbon rods for each of my weapons, anyone have good stuff to tell about those rods! The AR has a 16" barrel I want to easily get to the whole length of the barrel but don't want to much handle left over to it makes it easier to push without the rod bending as much. The 700 has a 26" barrel and I use a bore guide for both rifles so I need to take there length into the overall length of the rods as well. So what is the best choice for rod lengths for these two? Thanks! |

Just buy a Dewy rod at a length long enough to reach through all your barrels. Get 2 or 3 of them so you don't have to switch cleaning tips so much. I just bough a Tipton Carbon Fiber rod and it is as good as the Dewy rods if not better!!! A good rod, patches, jigs, solvent and brushes clean WAY, WAY BETTER then a Bore snake! Bore snakes are great for a quick cleaning but don't get copper or lead out of the bore. |
Yeah I am going to buy one for each caliber I have. I like the idea of the Tiptons and that is what I will be going with I just hadn't thought about getting out the tape measure and sticking in the bore guides then just measuring what I needed. Guess I was just being lazy! |
