Disassemble your entire lower for cleaning?
4/11/2005 4:14:52 PM EDT
[#1]
I usually start thinking about that after I've emptied a full case of 1000rnds of ammo but, that depends on how dirty the upper gets on a given shoot and the ammo.

Never.   I would if it needed it, but I've got a gun with at least 10,000 through it and it still doesn't need it.

Buffer once in awhile....

Never.  I may take the buffer out once in awhile.  But all other areas should be easily cleaned without disassembly.  I only change parts out when they show wear.  And I have not seen that yet, 7500+ rounds in one gun.

Every time! Dirt is bad and it should be cleaned every time. I shoot around 500 rounds per range trip though.

i just spray it down with brake cleaner if needed and relube when done

SIg pulling dissasmebling the lower that many time proberly does more harm than good. On an ar there should be no reason to remove the fire control group from the rifle if the parts are not broken or there is no primer jammed under a part.

When I start to notice it is heavier.

I don't acctually remove anything from the lower I just clean it out with a spray cleaner of some sort. It would be bad to remove all the springs and parts everytime.

I never disassemble parts from the LPK unless they are worn. I'll remove the buffer once in awhile to check things out.

Just use compressed air or non-chlorinated brake cleaner/gun scrubber to blast out anything hiding in the lower.

Never.

In the military our small arms guy told me he had more repairs on rilfes from too much disassembly and cleaning than from actual use.  In the Army they made everyone tear the rifles apart and clean the hell out of them after every use...more parts got broken, lost, misassembled causing damage than if the rifles were shot..had the bores punched and put up until the next time.

Never.  I soak a cleaning patch in some solvent and push the patch around a little with a plastic pick.  That's it!

Flush it with rem-oil, it'll leave clean , lubed and dry.

The Q-Tip is the single most powerful tool in an ar15 owner's bag-o-tricks.

The only time I've taken the fire control group out of any of my lowers is to replace a trigger.

Things you never need to take apart and clean:

[#23]
Blow it out with compressed air (from a compressor, not a little can)
Give a 5 second spray of CLP
Blow it out with compressed air
Give aother 5 second spray of CLP
Let it sit for an hour
Blow it out with compressed air
Give another 5 second spray of CLP
Let it sit overnight
Blow it out with compressed air

Wipe it down, leave it a little moist with CLP, go about your business, and repeat these steps next year.

Variation on the above theme.  I certainly never take it apart.
