I picked one of these the last time I ordered some cleaning supplies from midway.

I haven't decided whether I like it or not.  I didn't like the idea of using it on the muzzle end as it was intended but I did find out that it fits into the empty bolt carrier area and does a good job of centering the cleaning rod.

Does anyone else have one of these items and use it regularly?  Personally I think it was a waste of $6.89 ...

Not a gret idea. Cleaning from the breech end is preferred.

Yes, but on an M1 or M14 you have to clean from the muzzle and it works OK so why shouldn't it also be OK for ARs????

I think he already explained himself by saying "preferred."

You are fine cleaning from the muzzle but you have to take a little extra care around the end of the barrel.  Cleaning from the breech is preferred when you have the choice to clean from either end.

I clean from the breech with a rod guide, but use a muzzle guide as well to keep the rod and tool centered when it re-enters the bore.  The muzzle crown is critical to accuracy, so I make a special effort to protect it.

+1.
It's so easy to clean an AR from the breech, that I can't imagine why anyone would try from the muzzle.
I use OTIS though, so no guide for me. Though they do make a specifice guide for the AR family.

Interesting...could you give some details as I have a little trouble visualizing how you do this.  I've been looking for a way to protect both ends as I clean.  Thanks

I use a Sinclair guide with solvent port in the upper receiver, and a 10/22 muzzle guide on the barrel (I have a 0.920 bull barrel and the front sight base is set back from the muzzle).  The 10/22 guide has been modified by cutting an internal o-ring groove to keep it on the muzzle.  I insert the rod through the Sinclair guide, and the 10/22 guide keeps it centered as the rod tip exits and re-enters the bore.

Thanks Ronemus.  But how does the brush fit in?  I guess I can't see how a standard rod with either jag or brush can exit and re-enter through the guide...

Yup.   Why dump all that crap into the chamber & lugs?

Noooooo...  Not the sissy way.  I can't picture the guys on Omaha Beach pulling out Otis kits(or muzzle guides for that matter) because they were worried about getting a little crud into the chamber.

Hopefully, they'd be shooting and not cleaning.
