I know this is not AR specific, nor is it Survival specific, but this is the most appropriate forum I could think of (other than GD). Anyway, lemme explain: I have a sickness - in just about everything I do, I try to find "even more commonly available" replacements for stuff, and try them at least once. "Field Expediency" ya know... That said: I recall seeing a recipe here for a gun cleaner. I think it had ATF, Diesel fuel and some other stuff. Now, I have gun-specific products I use and I'm happy with, but its nice to know of (and have tried for myself) alternatives that could be found less than a 10-minute walk from my weapons cache. So, if you have recipes for home-made cleaners with common "household" ingredients.... spill 'em! Thanks! |

Thanks 761mph! I have all of that in the garage... May mix up a small batch. Gregory_K - can I get ED's_Red at my local Walgreens, Kroger or Exxon station? Any others out there? I seem to recall some with Ammonia or the like for cutting lead and/or copper fouling. |

IIRC the ATF is for lubrication and corrosion resistance with some detergent activity, then add other solvents such as mineral spirits, kerosene (diesel fuel is very close, to is jet fuel), then some fast-acting solvent such as MEK or acetone. Mix and enjoy. The ratios are whatever you have on hand, but even ratios will work. I usually throw in some CLP that I have around in the gallon container from a gunshow surplus seller. Hasn't detonated yet. I use this mostly for soaking small parts. Since I'm lazy I really recommend Iosso, but you could use any non-scratching scouring powder like Bon Ami or Barkeepers Friend. Run a few wet patches through, then scrub with an Iosso patch that will come out black as night, then rinse out the Iosso with some more wet patches and you'll have one really clean barrel. I had some old SMLE barrels that had who knows how much crap in the bores. The patches and brushes just weren't cutting it and Sweets just kept coming out blue. So I thought what the hell and used the Iosso. I was sold. I haven't tried the Bon Ami but it's basically the same thing, a soft scouring compound. But the Iosso won't imbed and sure is easier on a bore than a metallic projectile being pushed by 40,000 psi of blistering gas. Sorry if I got off track. |
| well atf and kerosene with acetone or paint thinner, marvels mystery oil. or if you got copper to clean out of a barrel use ammonia mixed about not even half and half with water and mystery oil or atf fluid. dont let it sit in the barrel over 5 minutes though. |
