This may be a lame question... Do crome lined barrels need to be broke-in/cleaned like regular barrels? thanks. |
|
While they, generally speaking, do not need the maintenence or break-in of chrome-moly barrels, this is no reason not to care for them properly, as they will reward you with better/longer service if not mistreated. Not that this was the point of your question, but NO, they are pretty much ready to go, outta the box. Mike |
| You don't need to "brake-in" a chrome lined barrel. Some will say that you don't even need to brake-in a non-chromed barrel. However, you should clean any barrel, chrome-lined or not, well. If you will be shooting again within a week or so, you don't need to do a spit-n-polish clean, just get all the crud out and put some CLP on the rifle. |

I recently bought a Varminter with a 24" chromy. I corresponded with Bushmaster about the proper break-in technique (some will argue break-in in itself is a myth) but here is the impression they gave me. First, use quality ammunition. I bought LC XM-193 and they said that would be great. They said to just shoot it and specifically NOT to clean it before it is compeltely broken in. Why? you may ask. it's a matter of what they call "polishing" the chrome. Although this chrome is not like the stuff on your car, it requires the chrome is polished/worked down till it's smooth so the super hard surface get's it "slipperyness"--One of the major advantages of the chrome lining. My plan. I'm going to shoot around 500-600 rnds of the XM-193. Then give it a good cleaning. Gundraw. Go to the bushmaster website and to there information center. It has a write up of proper "chrome lined barrel" breakin. |

Breakin is a personal thing, some do, some don't, here's what we (mentor, Dad, Uncle and myself) do with every "new" rifle and have had good luck with this process, from chrome-lined and chrome-moly'd barrels to the double-cryo'd Kriegers. Shoot 10-20 rounds, clean rifle w/ Sweets 7.62, rinse w/ SuperTech 2000 car-cleaner from Walmart to rid barrel of the Sweets.... Shoot 20-40 rounds, clean rifle again..... Shoot till your tired or run out of rounds, clean, rinse and then lube w/ CLP/Break-Free, put rifle away. Clean after every use thereafter.... We like to do all our cleaning w/ ONLY "nylon" bore brushes and while rifle is "warm" (NOT HOT, or your brush will melt), as the Sweets will make a nice froth as your working the Dewey rod back and forth, which the color of indicates whether bore is clean. Blue/green means there is still copper, mostly white froth indicates ya got her pretty well licked...., time to rinse. NEVER leave Sweets 7.62 in your bore for extended periods as it is SERIOUS bore cleaner and CAN ruin your bore! Mike |

My understanding was that the varmiter could be had in chrome moly or stainless but it was not offered in chrome lined due to accuracy concerns. Are you sure it isn't unlined chrome moly? |
|
Yes, a normal varminter is only offered in stainless or standard chrome-moly. I had mine custom built with a 24" national match (chrome lined) barrel being how I shoot lots of mil-spec(fmj) in unfavorable conditions. I'm sorry, I keep forgetting to mention it was custom built with the chrome-lined. [BD] Yes, it is often debated if chrome lining inhibits accuracy. Mostly it's a case of how well the barrel is made(Most chromies are military style/military tolerances). I'm still waiting for mine to break in so I can make my decision. So far it shows very promising signs. Gundraw |

I'll be sure to let everyone know how the groups turn out. I'm still waiting for my optics, as well as still breaking in the barrel. (been cold here in Kansas, not too much time to shoot). Already I see promising results. I hear this effect on accuracy is questionable. With the effects this chrome has on wear and durability, I would find it worth it even given the slight accuracy difference. We'll see [:D]. Gundraw |
