So what is the final verdict for using Simple Green as a cleaner for the AR15?  I have heard conflicting reports.

NO please don't.

So could you tell me why we should not use it as a cleaner? (Don't worry I won't).

It attacks aluminum.

Simple Green will supposedly remove anodizing from aluminum.

I do not know this to be a fact, but that is what some will tell you.

I find it difficult to believe, but I'm not taking any chances.

I do use diluted Simple Green to scrup out the inside of every USGI mag I purchase. I follow the cleaning with a hot water rinse. I have not seen any detrimental effects.

YMMV

Lots more, but here's a few examples...

The cleaning liquid, Simple Green, should not be used to clean aluminum equipment or parts because it is highly corrosive.

According to an article at avweb, a 3.5 gram aluminum alloy sample was immersed into a container of Simple Green. After one week, the sample was 295 milligrams lighter. The article further states that the Air Force issued a statement not to use Simple Green on Air Force equipment containing aluminum.

IIRC this is why we got rid of citri-solv for aircraft and parts washes.

Ugh @ simple-green.  I've scrubbed more floors....

Sigh.

Aluminum - Is it safe to use Simple Green on aluminum?
Simple Green products have been successfully and safely used on aircraft, automotive, industrial and consumer aluminum items for over 20 years. However, caution and common sense must be used: Aluminum is a soft metal that easily corrodes with unprotected exposure to water. The aqueous-base and alkalinity of Simple Green or Crystal Simple Green can accelerate the corrosion process. Therefore, contact times of All Purpose Simple Green and Crystal Simple Green with unprotected or unpainted aluminum surfaces should be kept as brief as the job will allow - never for more than 10 minutes. Large cleaning jobs should be conducted in smaller-area stages to achieve lower contact time. Rinsing after cleaning should always be extremely thorough - paying special attention to flush out cracks and crevices to remove all Simple Green/Crystal Simple Green residues. Unfinished, uncoated or unpainted aluminum cleaned with Simple Green products should receive some sort of protectant after cleaning to prevent oxidation.

Screw the manufacturer's recommendations.

I don't give a rat's rear what the manufacturer says.  Take it from the people who actually have to live with the results of what this stuff does, not the manufacturer for god's sake.

How do you think the sheet metal folks feel when they have to drill out and replace 200 nut plates six months after some idiot washed a panel down with SG?  You don't go posting warnings / cautions in technical data without some cause and some proof to back it up.  The approval process for posting warnings in tech data requires it.

Jesus.  I mean, really... who're you gonna trust here?  The guy selling you stuff to make a buck or the guy who has ZERO money invested and has to go out of his way to get a tech article / warning like the ones we've seen posted?

DONT USE SIMPLE GREEN ON YOUR RCVR!  There are other products out there which are PROVEN SAFE over thousands and THOUSANDS of uses.  Break-Free is one of the best, it's what we used consistantly for YEARS with zero trouble.

There are people who don't like CLP, and that's fine.  However, I challenge any of them to show me where it's dangerous to your rcvr, bbl or bolt group.  The stock might be a different issue but I've never seen break free attack anything plastic so I doubt it's an issue.

Manuf say sg will attack Al. They just chose a "softer" way of saying it.

Just as "Sweets 7.62" and all other "ammonia salt" copper removers will attack steel if left in the barrel to long.

Thanks for that post GK, I stand corrected.

My earlier post was based on my personal experience, but I was wrong. Obviously, the manufacturer knows their product better than I do.
