I am a Newbie to AR 15 And this board. In reading the posts in this section I am getting a little confused. I just purchased a AR15-Bushmaster XM15-E2S. I did shoot M-16s in the Army and we were never taught to clean in the way that I read here. I guess they thought we were too stupid to understand how( and many probably were). I have read so many different ways of taking care of my investment and I really want to do it right. Can someone tell me what tools and procedures are best to get the most out my new best friend. Ex. bore guides - Why, which ones, how are they used etc. I don't mind spending the money if it is necessary. Please be as specific as you care to or advise were I could find this kinda info. Thanks |

One's method(s) for cleaning a gun is like a fingerprint. They're all unique to the individual. Some will tell you that following the instructions in the owners manual or military technical manuals in sufficient. Cleaning the way those books tell you to IS sufficient, but some go a bit beyond that. Over cleaning is never a good thing though. You can use a bore snake, or a rod. You can just use CLP, or use a bore solvent and CLP for lubrication. Whatever you do, don't over do it and don't buy cheap crap. *Personally* I use a coated rode, a chamber guide, bronze brushes, bore solvent, CLP, cleaning brush, and rags. Since you have a BM, don't use a concentrated ammonia bore solvent. Something like Hoppes No.9 or Shooters Choice will work well. CLP is your best bet for lubrication and there are many brands. Read some of the other threads in this forum to see what others have said. In any case, cleaning can take you anywhere from 15 minutes, to a couple hours depending on your level of detail. Just don't over do it, but don't be sloppy either. Read the owners manual and the posts in this forum for further help. BTW, welcome to AR15.com |
