I followed proper barrel break in by cleaning after every shot for the first 50 rounds and then after every 10 shoot for the next 100.  Used all new Winchester 5.56 55 grain ammo.  The tip of the barrel were you can see the  rifling marks look like there turing to rust. I used Hoppes clearing in the gun which probably is my first mistake but after 10 rounds I turned to Break-Free.  it is normal for the rifling and inside of the gun to turn a rust type of color?     I'm afraid I might of ruined my barrel, If the gun is rusting alittle would firing it cause the gun to blow up?

Have you been putting a like coat of oil in the bore when your finished for the day?
What your probably seeing is copper jacket fouling from the bullets.Thats normal.
Hoppes No.9 and CLP will not remove the copper fouling from the bore. You will have to use something like BoreTech Benchrest Blend to get the copper out.

Copper fouling.

Try Sweets 7.62,Hoppe's bench rest,or Shooters choice copper solvent and follow the directions on the label.
Personally I prefer the Sweets,as it is so available, and in a thicker almost gel, form.

Copper fouling near the muzzle and crown are typical.

Relax,it's normal.

Good luck to ya!

I agree that you need to use Sweet's or Butch's Bore Shine to clear out your copper fouling.  I think that you'll be pleasantly surprised at how effective Sweet's is in removing the fouling, and in improving your accuracy.  I disagree that Hoppe's won't remove copper fouling.  Chances are that your not letting your bore soak long enough after brushing it.  Everyone want's to take their time shooting, but hurry through the cleaning process.  If you let Hoppe's soak for about 30-40 minutes in the bore, it will allow the ammonia to chemically react with the copper, and you can patch it out.  Chances are the CLP is giving your bore that shiney, polished look, but underneath your still going to have hidden copper fouling.

Using Hoppes is NEVER A MISTAKE (use it in the bore- put a little behind your ears for cologne but never call it a mistake!)

I love the smell of Hoppes #9 in the morning.

Sure hoppes #9 makes a great cologne.. but, it's downright pitiful at removing copper fouling!

I used Hoppes Bench rest just the other day. Follow the instructions. I left a coating in the bore over night, ran a few dry patches through the next day, no copper. Be sure to use some CLP or oil afterwords.

I've never used hoppes bench rest cleaner. Just the plain old #9, which doesn't remove a single spec of copper fouling. I've put the hoppes on the back shelf years ago. I'm not about to even try it today with *much* better cleaners on the market. Mpro7 and Sweets is what I use.
